John F. Kennedy's report on the Soviet Arms Buildup in Cuba
- Date
1962-10-22
- Summary
-
Kennedy announces that he has ordered a strict naval blockade of Cuba in an effort to stop all shipments of offensive military equipment to the island. He states that there is evidence to prove that a series of offensive missile sites were being established. “The purpose of these bases,” he says, “can be none other than to provide a nuclear strike capability against the Western Hemisphere.” After the speech, Jim Snyder and Bob Nelson discuss the events that led up these actions. A later "Newsday" report follows.
