Summary
Oral history interview with Orville John McDiarmid conducted by Marlene Mayo on September 6, 1979. Orville John McDiarmid (1909 - December 19, 1982) was born in Ottawa, Canada. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Toronto in 1932, his master's from Toronto, and his doctorate from Harvard in 1936. Before World War II he taught economics at the now Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and at the College of William and Mary before being offered a job with the Joint War Production Committee for United States and Canada, where he remained until 1942. He then served in the Army during the War and was sent to Japan in September 1945 to work in the Occupation. While there, he worked in the Finance Division of the Economic and Scientific Section for 10 months. He went on to work for the State Department until 1955, which brought him to Japan again. During his time with the State Department, he became the Chief of the International Finance Division and then Deputy Director of a development mission in the Philippines. He went on to work as a Chief Economist at the World Bank until his retirement in 1974. In 1982, Orville John McDiarmid passed away at the age of 73.
