In this period of change, iron and steel were everywhere, including on women's clothing in the form of steel hoops, cages and bustles. It was a period that began with moderation, but soon became a contest for conspicuous consumption. It was an age of contradictions when children began to be dressed as children while women were strapped into tight corsets.
