Summary
Oral history interview with Albert Mark conducted by Kay Dove on October 20, 1970. Albert Mark (December 14, 1915 - August 15, 2006) was an Army lieutenant during the Occupation. He joined the Army before the war, working with communications and was stationed in North Africa and Europe. He left the Army in 1945, but then went back in 1948, volunteering to go to Japan. Mark worked at General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in the Communications Center for three and a half years, handling the press and the communications for the Armed Forces. He also taught English classes at a bank where he learned more about Japan and the people. In 1949, he married Elizabeth Chatwick Mark, an American whose father was stationed in Japan at the time. After the birth of their first child out of four, the couple moved back to the U.S. Albert Mark passed away in 2006 in Alexandria, VA.
