Oral history interview with Glen Fukushima conducted by Marlene Mayo on December 10, 2019. Glen Shigeru Fukushima (b. 1949) was born in Tokyo, Japan during the Occupation of Japan. His father was an American soldier in the Army and part of the United States' Occupation Forces while his mother was a native of Japan. His early childhood was spent in U.S. military bases including Camp Sendai, Washington Heights and Camp Zama. Fukushima graduated from Stanford University with a degree in economics. He received his Master's in Regional Studies from Harvard University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. His academic achievements include being awarded the National Science Foundation Fellowship at Harvard, the Fulbright Fellow and the Japan Foundation Fellow at University of Tokyo. Fukushima started his career as an attorney at the Paul, Hasting, Janofsky & Walker (later Paul Hastings) law firm (1982-1985). Between 1988-1990, Fukushima served as the Deputy Assistant United States Trade Representative for Japan and China. He would then served as the vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (1993-1997), going on to serve as president for two terms. In 2012, joined the Center for American Progress (CAP) public policy think tank, as a senior fellow, where he focuses on U.S. foreign economic policy, international political economy, and United States relations with Asian countries. His philanthropic nature was highlighted in 2022 when he established the Fulbright-Glen S. Fukushima Fund, providing one of the largest donations in history to the Fulbright Program in Japan.
