Summary
Oral history interview with Glen Fukushima conducted by Marlene Mayo on December 10, 2019. Glen S. Fukushima (1949 -), an American businessman, philanthropist, and scholar, was born in Tokyo, Japan, during the Occupation of Japan. His father was an American soldier in the Army and part of the United States' Occupation Forces, while his mother was a native of Japan. His early childhood was spent in U.S. military bases, including Camp Sendai, Washington Heights, and Camp Zama. Fukushima attended Deep Springs College in 1967 before transferring to Stanford University, where he received a BA in economics. During that time, he completed an exchange program at Keio University in Tokyo and attended the 1969 Japan-American Student Conference (JASC). He received his Master's in Regional Studies from Harvard University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. His academic achievements include being awarded the National Science Foundation Fellowship at Harvard, the Fulbright Fellowship, and the Japan Foundation Fellowship at the University of Tokyo. Fukushima started his career as an attorney at the Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker (now Paul Hastings) law firm (1982-1985). Between 1988-1990, Fukushima served as the Deputy Assistant United States Trade Representative for Japan and China. He would then serve as the vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (1993-1997), going on to serve as president for two terms.
