Summary
President Kennedy, in speaking to the ASNE, strongly defends his administration's economic proposals and the programs he advocates, including housing, health care, civil rights, employment, and urban renewal. “In short,” he says, “the Federal Government is not a remote bureaucracy. It must seek to meet those needs... which can best be met by the nationwide cooperation of all, and which cannot be met by State and local governments.” Questions from reporters (beginning at 22:00), however, are more concerned with Cuba, Laos, taxes, the economy and events in Mississippi.
