Summary
Oral history interview with Luella Moffit conducted by Marlene Mayo on September 11, 1979. Luella Moffett was born in Punjab, Pakistan to American parents before moving to England, where she lived for many years prior to World War II. When the War started, she joined the Women's Royal Naval Service working as a radio mechanic, before moving to the United States in 1946. She moved to California and attended San Mateo Junior College, where she learned shorthand. Soon after she applied for secretarial jobs closer to her birthplace in Asia and got a job with the American Civil Service in Japan, arriving in 1949. She worked mainly in the Legal and Government Section within Civil Affairs under Dr. Joseph Featherstone as a civilian secretary. While in Japan, she also taught English and shorthand to Japanese residents. She left her job at Civil Affairs and began working for the Far East Air Forces, initially in the Vice Commander's office, then in the Protocol office, and later in the 89th Airway and Air Communications office. She stayed at this job until 1956, when she left Japan.
