Oral history interview with Arthur Klauser conducted by Marlene Mayo on December 1, 1979. Arthur Klauser (April 26, 1923 - February 14, 2011) was born in Toledo, OH but grew up in Evanston, IL. He attended DePauw University, studying German language and history. During his time in school, he enlisted in the Army and got called in for duty after his sophomore year in 1943. With the Army, he took Japanese language training before being sent to Japan in 1946 to work in ATIS (Allied Translation and Interpreter Section). During the Occupation, Klauser worked as a translator of economic documents before being accepted to work as an interpreter for the war crimes trials. After the Army, he received his bachelor's and master's at the University of Michigan and then spent several years working for the CIA, mostly based in Japan, before graduating from Yale Law in 1958. In 1979, Klauser joined Mitsui & Co., one of Japan's largest trading companies, and opened their Washington, D.C. office. He remained working there until his retirement in 1990. In 2011, Arthur Klauser passed away at the age of 87.
