This program shows the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's first Young Conductors Competition, which included twenty contestants under the age of thirty, all without previous experience conducting an orchestra. The contestants went through several rounds of competition which tested their abilities, and the winner, Arthur Fagen, was given the opportunity to conduct the symphony in a public performance at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. Other finalists were Carl Topilow, second place, and Tonu Kalam, third place. Includes commentary from Dr. Elliott Galkin and the Sergiu Comissiona Conductor of the Baltimore Orchestra on what makes a good conductor.
