In The fabric of their lives, the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute becomes involved in research to control cholera in Bangladesh. In The birdmen of Catonsville, scientists at University of Maryland, Baltimore County use high-end technology in research efforts to minimize avian accidents between birds and aircraft. In The music man, Bill Cummings, composer and choir director at Coppin State College, creates an original soundtrack for a classic silent film. In The millennium bug, University System of Maryland trains students as programmers to interface with companies to deal with the year 2000 computer date conversion crisis, the "Y2K problem." In I hear a symphony, University of Maryland, College Park hosts the National Orchestra Institute, an intense annual summer program for selected music students culminating in three public concerts. In A meeting of the minds, Salisbury State University hosts the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) where over 2,000 undergraduates and advisors from the United States and foreign countries meet to explore the importance of the research experience. Work study focuses on how the University of Maryland at Baltimore is involved in a study to assess effects of the 1996 Federal Welfare Reform Act on Maryland welfare recipients.
