Oral history interview with Edward Griffin conducted by Marlene Mayo on February 17, 1979. Edward G. Griffin (1926-2017) was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He remained in Connecticut throughout college, eventually attending Yale University until he was drafted into the Army in 1944. During the Occupation, Griffin used his Japanese language training at the University of Chicago to work at the Osaka, Japan headquarters of the 24th Infantry Division, working an office job that helped the Army keep track of its soldiers. While in Japan, Griffin attended Keio University in Tokyo as a Fulbright Scholar from 1954 to 1956. Once returning to the U.S., Griffin studied history at Columbia University and became a historian and worked for the Department of State. In addition, he taught at George Washington, Howard, and American Universities. Griffin passed away in Washington, D.C., at age 90.
