Summary
For years, Mrs. Alving has, for appearance's sake, endured a loveless marriage to a dissolute and drunken man. She even sent her only son away from home so that he would not be corrupted by his father. But despite her efforts, the ghosts of the past are resurrected as her son reappears, the obvious heir to his father's sins and excesses.
