Summary
Oral history interview with Robert H. Walker conducted by Marlene Mayo on May 22, 1979. Robert H. Walker (March 15, 1924 - January 15, 2010) was a professor, scholar, and author born in Cincinnati, OH. He completed his bachelor’s degree in literature from Northwestern before attending the Navy language school for Japanese in Boulder, CO in 1945. During the Occupation, he worked with the Civil Information and Education Division of the military, arriving in Japan during the summer of 1946. He left Japan in 1947 and went on to receive his master's in American literature from Columbia University in 1950 and his doctorate in American studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955. Walker directed the American studies program at the University of Wyoming before joining the George Washington University faculty in 1959. He went on to become the director of their American studies program and an English literature professor before retiring in 1996. In 2010, Robert H. Walker passed away. He was 85 years old.
